“Don't be afraid of what the night-time may bring You must understand that you can dream of anything. ”
- from "Sleep Like a Child" by Joss Stone

Dear Dream Zone,

My son was between 3 and 4 when he woke up and was saying that, "Daddy fell in the shower and cracked his head!" The most recent was yesterday morning and he said to me, "Mommy you were dead. There was blood every where. There was a guy with a big gun." This is very disturbing to me. Could he be seeing the future or is this just a dream?

Lauri: Don't worry. Your son is not seeing the future. He is at the age where nightmares typically begin... and believe it or not, t'is a good, healthy sign! Nightmares begin when children start to process negativity in their minds. He is realizing that bad things can happen, people can get hurt... and even die. These are big concepts for little minds to ponder so they often manifest themselves in the form of a nightmare. His world right now consists mainly of Mommy and Daddy, which is why you two are the ones getting hurt in his dreams. Is there anything going on right now that would make him worry about you two? You can help stop these dreams by helping him re-create the ending. Perhaps he could transform into a super hero and save you. Help him to create a positive ending where he has power and control because, ultimately, it is his awareness of having no control over bad things that causes the dreams.

Dear Dream Zone,

Someone came into my home while I was asleep and cleaned out my garage. It was nighttime. I sensed a ‘spirit’ had been in my house and went to see if the garage door was secured. I feared someone had broken in. I discovered that all of the boxes and other items that filled my garage for the past twelve years had been removed and brand new bicycles of different types were hanging from the ceiling [as you would see in a store]. It occurred to me that my cousin, who has been dead for over 40 years, had cleaned it out. I opened the garage door and saw where a roll-off had been used to haul away the garage contents and left tracks in a pile of dirt. I thought I would have to smooth the dirt out so that my neighbors would not complain. I was not afraid but secretly pleased because finally I would be able to use my garage as an extra room.

Dr Katia:In the dark of the night without you even realizing, you're cleaning out your life. It's a part of your life that's been put on hold for some time now. The bikes mean a healthy movement toward a goal you've been wanting to pursue but couldn't because of a specific blockage for the past 12 years. Now at last you can bring about this healthy endeavor, whatever it is. Perhaps these issues started back when you were young and playing with your cousin. The ghost or spirit is something from the past that is causing you to finally make this purge in your life. The garage, your catch-all storage place of old baggage and emotional clutter, is clear now with new space to “live” your life. Very good symbolism here!

Veronica replies:Indeed, I have been in a season of growth where I have been consciously confronting my fears. For as long as I can remember, I have been afraid of something, indeed dating back to childhood, primarily around issues of security needs. I decided a few years ago to begin living without fear or dread and life continues to present me with opportunities to confront my fears and allow myself to become transformed in the process. After rearing children, caring for a sick family member, and grieving the loss of a loved one over the past 12 years, I have come to a place in my life where I am embracing my needs, desires, and dreams. I am ‘de-cluttering’ fear and other barriers to the life I want to create. I surprise myself sometimes at my own boldness in speech and actions. I am a much more courageous woman. Thank you immensely. You were right-on in your comments.

Fascinating Dream Fact:

In a recent study, participants were asked to solve scrambled word puzzles after being awakened during both the REM phase of sleep (when we dream) and the less active non-REM phases. Their performance improved by 32 percent when awakened after a dream! I love the results of this study because it proves how important dreaming is. Dreaming makes you smarter. One of dreaming's main purposes is to help you figure things out... and not just puzzles... but your life!!
